Twitter’s Heated OkCupid Allows You To Filter Out Climate Change Deniers
When you're getting to know someone, it's important to tackle the big questions in life. You've got to learn about who that person is so that you can make informed decisions about whether or not you're actually compatible.
To some, having similar political ideologies is important, and to others, it isn't so much of a deal-breaker. OkCupid has decided to give their users the choice to decide if believing in climate change is something that's important to them, and Twitter users had some thoughts.
They Found A Surprising Amount Of Their Users Cared About It
In the last few years, OkCupid has reported a 240% increase in environmental keywords, like 'recycling,' global warming,' 'climate change,' and even 'Greta Thunberg.' To them, this seemed like it was something to tune into.
Over 97% Of Their Users Claim To Care About The Environment
According to Gizmodo, 97% of OkCupid's users believe in climate change, and 82% of their users are gravely concerned about it. Additionally, 90% of users said they would make changes to their lifestyle if they knew it was hurting the environment.
That's Some Pretty Overwhelming Evidence
Since OkCupid uses an algorithm to match you with people who are best suited to your interests, it's likely that if the environment is a big concern to you, you won't be matched with too many climate change deniers even if you don't have the filter on.
OkCupid Wants To Focus On Matching You With People You're Compatible With
Michael Kaye, OKCupid's Global Communication Manager, said, "Since your match percentage with someone shows how compatible you two are, if you are a climate change activist and they think climate change is fake news, your match percentage is going to decrease."
This Basically All Means That Caring About The Environment Will Get You Laid
That's good news for all those people out there who are actively doing their part to make a change and want to find someone to make those sorts of life changes with.
Of Course, Not Everyone Is Agreeing
There are a lot of people on Twitter who are commenting about how absurd the new algorithm is, or how absurd it is to believe that climate change is real and something humans have any say in.
Its Interesting To See How Polorizing A Topic Climate Change Can Be
Some people in the comments were getting genuinely angry that there are people who wouldn't believe in something like climate change and have claimed they would never date anyone with those beliefs.
Whether Or Not You Agree With Them, They Have A Point
Renee Lertzman, a psychologist who spoke to Earther said, "In my experience, people are finding that it's really difficult to have an intimate relationship unless there’s a really deep alignment on how we’re relating to the issue."
She Went On To Explain You Don't Have To Have Matching Passions, But It Should Be Shared
"That doesn't mean you have to feel exactly the same way or engage on exactly the same level, but what really matters is that how you feel about it is actually okay with your partner."
It Makes Sense, Really
Whether or not you would use this OkCupid feature, there is something to be said about making sure that you have the right things in common with the people you're dating.
