Recently, a young woman named Bethany went into a store to buy some pads and was asked a really strange question by the cashier. Instead of completing the purchase as usual, she was asked to show a piece of ID for age verification.
I’m pretty sure that no woman has been asked this before while shopping for hygiene products because menstruation-related products are a necessity, not an age-restricted item like alcohol. Bethany expressed her confusion over the situation online, and women everywhere shared their opinions on what had gone down.
“I Have Questions”
Bethany Margaret, a young woman from the U.K., starts the TikTok video she created to explain the situation by stating that she “has questions, BIG questions.”
This is because she was asked a very strange question by a cashier and experienced something that had never happened to her before while at a grocery store.
She Got Asked For An ID When Buying An Ordinary Product
For alcohol or certain medication with specific ingredients, getting ID’d at a store can be normal.
But it isn’t normal to ID someone for a necessary, non-restricted item, such as period products.
You Shouldn’t Get ID’d For Period Products
Bethany says in the video that she “bought one thing, and one thing only, pads.”
For those who don’t know, Sainsbury’s is the second-largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom. So why do they think they’re a club or something and that can ID people left, right, and center?
Bethany Was Very Confused
Bethany expresses her confusion about the situation by pondering aloud: “Is this a thing? Are we getting ID’d for PADS now?”
The questions continue: “What’s this about? Can anyone help?”
Watch The Video Here
You can watch the original video for yourself above. Bethany’s video blew up, gaining the attention of women everywhere.
Many shared in the comments their opinions on the situation. Let’s go through some of the responses.
People Were Shocked That This Happened To Her
People were confused and outraged, and one user informed Bethany that it’s illegal to ask someone for their ID on a purchase like this.
Also, asking for an ID to purchase pads is just ridiculous—there is no “legal age” to get a period.
Some Girls Get Periods At A Very Young Age
Many users commented on the fact that girls as young as nine and ten need period products.
Imagine how ridiculous it would be if someone asked a nine-year-old for their ID.
People Had Different Theories On Why It Happened
People had tons of theories about what had happened. Some thought it was a computer error, others thought the cashier wanted to find her on social media.
Someone claimed that it was a suspicious attempt to get her name and address. Another theory was that she was using a credit card to make the purchase, which you do indeed need to be of legal age to do.
“They Should Be Free”
People were outraged at the fact that she got ID’d for something that she shouldn’t even necessarily have to pay for.
Periods are a natural bodily function, and women cannot choose whether they want to have a period or not. It’s absurd how expensive these products can be.
Bethany Is Not The Only One
One woman even commented on the video that the same exact thing happened to her at a Sainsbury’s.
She raises a very valid point that young children don’t even have IDs.
We Will Never Know The Truth…
Women of all ages use period products, and it is a necessity for that time of the month.
And even though we will never know the real reason the cashier chose to ID Bethany for the prads, there is always room for speculation…
