This Woman Admits She Wears Makeup For The Opposite Sex And Claims Everyone Who Says They Don’t Is Lying

There are many reasons a person would want to wear makeup, and nobody here is judging that reason. Well, maybe one woman is—but only if you claim you do it for yourself. Recently, one Reddit user said that she believes women who claim they "only wear makeup for themselves" are lying, and putting down other women who say they do wear makeup for attention.

So, she explains that in a way, she perceives these women as "pick me girls," and that wanting to attract other people or to get attention should be an acceptable reason for doing your makeup. Read on to find out more about how people responded to her post.

Why Do Women Wear Makeup?

In fact, back in 2012, a study by Harris Poll found that 44% of women wore makeup to hide "flaws" on their skin. But, around 48% of women said the main reason they wear makeup is simply because they like it. And only 11% said they felt pressured by societal norms to wear makeup.

In reality, nearly at least half of women aren't actually trying to conform to a certain standard of beauty through their beauty routines. Instead, it turns out most women just love makeup, and love to use makeup. But why you wear makeup is totally up to you!

Wearing Makeup For Themselves

Although the claim that "we only wear makeup for ourselves," has caused many online debates, I feel like there is a fair bit of truth in it.

Personally, I'm the type of girl to wear makeup nearly every day, just to feel a little bit more confident about myself, and because I enjoy the act of putting it on. Putting on mascara is a part of my morning routine.

One Reddit User Shared Her Opinion

Regardless, there are many different reasons why a woman (or man) would want to wear makeup—and that's okay.

Yet, this female Reddit user believes that there is a huge problem with the saying "women only wear makeup for themselves." She starts off the post by writing that she knows her opinion might be unpopular.

She Doesn't Like The "We Only Wear It For Ourselves" Mentality

The user explains: "I constantly see this come up in memes on Facebook, discussions on Reddit, especially as rebukes to men, generally—but not exclusively. That women do makeup for themselves, not for you. That makeup is a form of self-expression and women wear it for themselves, to the point that this seems to be the only acceptable opinion on why you may want to wear makeup."

She claims that she finds the constant "we only wear it for ourselves" mentality bothersome. She continues: "I tried to figure out why it rubbed me the wrong way for a long time and I realized it's because of two reasons."

Lots Of Women Wear Makeup For Other People, Including Herself

The woman explains that she does wear makeup for herself and for self-expression, but she also acknowledges that she wears it for a number of other reasons that aren't "just for me." She wears it to look pretty on a night out on the town—specifically so people will think she looks good and hopefully can catch the attention of a "potential suitor."

She also wears makeup on dates to look attractive for the other person. She explains: "I wear makeup at work sometimes to look better to my coworkers, despite not being in a makeup-friendly industry."

Women Are Treated Better For It

The woman claims that she's even worn makeup at work on days that she felt like she would be treated better for it.

She continues: "I wear makeup in photos I post online so I can track progress and post cool looks I do as a form of self-expression. I enjoy getting likes and reactions from my photos. Who doesn't?"

Reason Two: Internalized Misogyny

The user explains that she believes that the "I solely do it for myself" crowd really reminds her of the internalized misogyny of women with the "I'm not like other girls" mentality.

The "not like other girls" woman brags and states that she is not like other women as a way to show that she is unique and therefore better than other women. She explains that by never admitting that they wear makeup to look better, these women are being "pick me" girls.

"I Think It Should Be Acceptable To Have One Of The Reasons You Do Makeup Be For Wanting To Attract Other People"

She claims that the "I do it for myself only" crowd says they aren't like those other girls who are doing it for so-called attention-seeking behavior. So, these women who say they do makeup for themselves find themselves better than other women who do it for attention.

She continues: "I think the main issue with these accusations against women who do makeup is to yes point out that it is a form of self-expression, done for the woman herself, but those who do makeup for other people in conjunction with this aren't necessarily awful either. I think it should be acceptable to have one of the reasons you do makeup be for wanting to attract other people or to 'get attention.'"

One user explains that women are basically screwed either way. People who don't wear makeup are scrutinized, but so are people who wear too much makeup.

Why do we have to care so much about the reason why? People wear it for their own reasons, so just let them be!

Many users explained that there's not really a specific reason as to why women wear makeup because it is a little bit of everything.

If I want to try a fun new look on a night out, even though I'm not sure it'll make me look better, I'm gonna do it, because why not?

Some explained that the only time they have heard a woman claim they do it for themselves was when someone pointed out that they were "wearing too much makeup."

To be honest, it is a really good response to tell someone who is hating on the look.

This user was one who agreed with the OP and explained that she likes the way she looks with makeup, but also because she likes the attention that it gives her.

And yes, we are all attention-seeking to some degree, so why don't we just embrace it, hey?

Like many other commenters, this (now deleted) user explained that they wear face makeup usually to look better at work, but also so they feel more comfortable.

So clearly, many women think that the reason to wear makeup just doesn't matter, because there are a lot of them. And experimenting with makeup is fun, and that's that.
