Here’s Why Living Alone Can Be A Blessing And A Curse
Getting to live alone can be someone's most significant milestone. After going through college and then still having roommates for some years, it can add up. It's fantastic once you get that pad to yourself, but it doesn't come without its downsides.
With anything, there are positives and negatives, so here's what you can expect when living alone. Let's start with the pros first.
Complete Privacy
When you have the luxury of waking up alone in a place, you have the highest level of privacy. You can do whatever you want and no one will see.
You Decide On All The Decor
You're not an interior designer, but you know what you like and how you like it. With a roommate, you might have to compromise on some creative ventures, but you don't have to live on your own.
No Need To Share
I know most of these will sound selfish, but they're the truth. Not having to share anything you purchase is a privilege roommates only dream about on their best nights.
No More House Rules
What if I want to leave a dish in the sink for a few hours because I'm in a hurry to leave? I can't possibly abide by these house rules and would rather have my own or none at all.
You Can Eat Anywhere
This might not seem like a big deal, but it is. Some roommates come to terms that certain areas are off-limits for food. Not having to worry about that lecture on cleanliness is amazing.
Clean On Your Own Time
Often, when living with others, you're more self-conscious about how clean you leave things. You might even have a weekly schedule for chores. There's none of that nonsense when you don't have roommates.
Enjoy The Silence
How important is it for you to have some alone and quiet time? If you don't care to have some peace, then you're an exception, but many others would love to have quiet time whenever they wanted.
You Can Have Guests Over Whenever
Living on your own means that you don't have to tell anyone else when you have your friends coming over. Having to do that all the time becomes irritating for many.
Your Clothing Is Safe
Let's be honest, if you've ever had a roommate, either you or the other has borrowed clothes. You don't mind, but sometimes you never get it back. Alone, you won't ever have to worry.
You're In Control
When there isn't anyone else around, your life is entirely in your hands. There's no way you can blame any negative energy on a bad roommate or make excuses thanks to anyone else.
Absolute Freedom
Did you forget to put your pants on after your shower because you wanted to take a look outside? No worries, there's no one else there to care that you're scantily clad.
No Need To Greet
Those who've had a roommate can attest to this. When you walk into the kitchen in the morning and then in comes your roomie, sometimes you're still grouchy and don't feel like saying good morning.
Listen To Whatever You Want
Music is fantastic in any medium, but hearing it out loud is one of the best ways to consume it. When you don't have anyone else to share your space with, you can blast it as loud as you want.
Sleep Wherever Your Body Decides
Sometimes, your roommates won't bother you if you fall asleep on the couch or the kitchen table, but other times they might. Who cares where you want to rest your head?
Don't Worry About Compromising
What if someone else doesn't like your taste in art? Say you wanted a piece above the couch, but the other person didn't like it, so now you're stuck compromising. You won't have to worry about that if you're living alone.
Lack Of Company
This could very well be a pro for introverts and folks who enjoy being alone, but others might not adjust to this so well. When there's never anyone else around, that could become draining and sad.
Life Gets Boring
When you go from having at least one person around daily to having none, your social life takes a drastic hit. Now you have to summon the courage to start going out alone more often, which isn't as fun.
Feeling Less Safe
Some people aren't as worried as others, but many don't feel as secure with no one else in the home. Someone might get extra security like a bat and an alarm system complete with cameras.
No One Else To Help
Carrying in the grocery bags with no help feels like a gym day. It would be nice to have someone carry a few so you don't feel like you just tried to pull Excalibur out of its stone.
Loneliness
This might be the most obvious one, but loneliness is definitely a factor to consider. Think about all that time you'll be alone in your room, the kitchen, and the living room.
