New Zealand Man Builds A Stick Library At The Dog Park For The Good Boys And Girls

Not all heroes wear capes—sometimes they hold a dog leash in one hand and a screwdriver in the other. And they're saving the time of dogs at the dog park and the lives of the chew toys they go through on a weekly basis.

Local craftsman Andrew Taylor decided that what his local dog park needed was a toy lending service on demand, so he created a stick library for all the park's furry frequenters. The best part is that you don't need to figure out the Dewey decimal system to borrow from this library.

He Got The Idea From His Dog Bella

Andrew Taylor, 59, was trimming the trees around his house in Kaiapoi, New Zealand when he thought of a better use for the branches than in the yard waste bag. The inspiration came from his dog, Bella, who, like pretty much every dog does with every single expensive toy we bring home for them, tears apart anything she can get her teeth around.

Taylor thought other dogs might like a toy alternative that's durable but also easy to find. So he sanded down the twigs so they're splinter-free and made a custom lending box for the dogs to take sticks from (and hopefully return).

Everyone knows that dogs love three things—chasing squirrels, potato chips, and a good stick to run around after. It's just an inescapable law of the universe. But when the Taylors made the trip to their local dog park, they were disappointed to find that there wasn't a stick in sight for Bella to play with.

So the Taylors dropped off the homemade stick library at the park. To nobody's surprise, every dog loved it. Tayla Reece, his daughter, posted a Tik Tok video of all the happy dogs running up and choosing the perfect stick for their play. It has to be the perfect one of course.

'If you build it, they will come' has never been truer than when the Taylors dropped off the stick library. Tayla said that she put out the call to locals to bring their furry friends for a community playdate—and boy did they ever come running with their tails wagging for this event.

She said that about 50 people showed up to the small dog park with their four-legged best friends. One guy apparently even brought his cat, who I'm sure had a hard time understanding the concept of sharing and returning. It's just, you know, a cat thing.
