Kmart Releases New Line Of Same-Sex Couple Doll Sets Because It’s About Time

Children play with dolls for all kinds of reasons—maybe they like the fashion, doing their hair, or completely shaving it off and going to town with a Sharpie on the doll's face. Whatever floats their boat. But Barbies and other dolls have always looked a certain type of way... and we're pretty over that.

Kmart is joining the movement in the media to spread visibility outside of your Malibu Barbie and Ken couples to other very real and very important family structures with their same-sex couple family doll sets. These dolls are reigniting our faith in humanity and it's about time that someone made them.

There Are Two Family Sets

Kmart Australia, the company behind the dolls, is making them in two different family structures. One doll set comes with two dads and two kids, and the other one comes with two moms and two kids. And because Kmart is woke and here to dunk on every other children's toy and get brownie points from us, they're putting a dog in each set.

Kmart is making these $15 dolls only available for online purchase for now. Part of the fun of ordering these dolls is that you don't know which family set you're getting until your order arrives. And honestly, they're both iconic so why would you care?

In a move that makes me want to go outside and feel the sun on my face, the dolls have sold out already online. This just goes to show that tons of people are interested and excited about this product. Ahem, other doll companies, are you paying attention?

Lots of people commented online that they're excited about this step in the right direction. But some shoppers were quick to point out that there's a lack of diversity still in skin color and ability of the dolls. We're all here for diversity, so hopefully, this is just the start of us seeing more dolls that look like more people on the market.

The Kmart doll release is actually part of a bigger gang of diverse dolls hitting the market. Just in September, Mattel released gender-neutral dolls with interchangeable and customizable looks in their Creative World series so non-binary, and really any kid, can play with these dolls and not feel constricted. Barbie can actually wear something other than high heels for once and I'll bet money she's excited.

With these dolls out for sale on the market showing kids that there's not only one right way to be, you can bet that more will follow shortly. These dolls are making me think the world maybe isn't so terrible after all.
